Cut into rock, suspended over cliffs, or hidden inside a courtyard — the pools that changed how we think about a residence.
A pool is the one element of a house that everybody remembers. It sets the rhythm of the day, decides where lunch happens, and quietly determines whether a group spends the week together or apart.
The examples that stay with us have very little to do with size. A twelve-metre channel of dark water running the length of a Marbella terrace. A cistern in a Tuscan podere, cool even in August. A ledge above Es Vedrà that appears, from certain angles, to end in open sea.
What they share is orientation. Each one is positioned for a particular hour — the pool that catches first light, the one built entirely for six in the evening.
