The Experience

You arrive in late afternoon, when the light has turned the colour of honey and the cicadas have settled. The gate closes behind the car and the noise of the coast disappears entirely. What remains is stone underfoot, the scent of rosemary, and the long blue line of the water beyond the terrace.

The architecture is quiet rather than grand — deep-set windows, lime-washed walls, oak that has been allowed to age. Rooms open into one another and then, almost without ceremony, into the garden. Mornings belong to the shaded loggia and a pot of coffee. By midday the family has scattered: some to the water, some to the hammocks under the pines.

Dinner is the ceremony of the day. The long table is laid outside as the sky dims, candles are lit along the wall, and a chef who knows the market by name brings out plate after plate. Afterwards nobody moves for hours. This is the particular luxury of the house: not the finishes, but the way it slows everyone down.
